Mission Band Costumes for Guys and Dolls

February 2002

The patterns for these costumes were generated using Wild Ginger's Tailor Made software. I drafted three rough sizes: small, medium and large. The jackets had a mock button closure; they were held together with velcro.

The process was done in three stages: a design shell made of sewable pattern drafting paper, fitting samples done with sheeting, and the final outfit made of a medium-weight cotton. The whole project required close to 35 yards of 45" fabric; I was lucky to find it at Wal-Mart, of all places, and at less than $2 per yard.

Costumes for The Velveteen Rabbit

March 2002

Back to Costume Central!! This time it is for my daughter Diana's class play, The Velveteen Rabbit. I volunteered to make seven rabbits, one lion, one mouse, one horse, a fairy and a sailor costume.

The fairy costume was fun to make, as the girl playing the part had specific ideas on how it should look.

Black Tailored Skirt

March 2002

When I went shopping with my daughter Diana for an outfit to wear to our upcoming trip to New York and her first exposure to New York theater, we were dismayed to discover that there were no "nice" clothes to be found. There were either the fluffy, frilly easter dresses, or the hip-casual dresses that seem to be all the rage. No suit and jacket sets, no simple dresses. So I had to make something.

Click here to see pictures of Diana's first real skirt: a tailored black wool straight skirt lined in silk.

Sleeveless Summer Dress

April 2002

I made this dress to wear to the theater in New York when Bob and I went up as part of a Smithsonian Study Tour, "Celebration of Broadway". The trip was fantastic, and I made good use of the bus trip up by hemming this new dress.

American Girl Doll International Wardrobe

April 2002

For my kids' school fundraising auction, I decided to make a wardrobe of international outfits for the American Girl Doll. I ended up with a silk kimono, satin flamenco dress, and a traditional Dutch costume.
