Smithson Gala 2004

Bob's Vest

I'm not the only one attending this event; Bob needed to look just as spiffy! Last year he wore a cummerbund, which he didn't like, so this year I made him a vest to match my dress and the theme of the ball.

The inspiration for this vest came from this fabric I found in the Keepsake Quilting catalog.

To keep it in harmony with my outfit, I used the same sparkle slinky for the lapels and the tie. The pattern is from Vogue.

The buttons don't show up very well, but they are large Aurora Borealis crystals.

Take a close look at the lower right lapel:

That is the constellation Cancer (Bob's birth sign), done with hot-set crystals!! (I do wonder how many people will spot it, or recognize it)

And I have to thank Bobbi Bullard for her inspiration in doing the crystals.

Here's the tie:

It's a pre-tied tie, on a velvet ribbon. It's too loose here; I need to snug up the clasp in the back.

And I realize that his only stud and cufflink set is Tigers Eye... I might have to spring for another set!

The lining of the vest is silk.

It still needs a final pressing and a bit of handwork to keep the lapels tidy, but I am very happy with how it came out. It will look fabulous under his tuxedo jacket and provide just the right accent for the evening.
