My first swimsuits

completed April 13, 2003

One of the most eagerly anticipated packages this year was the newest program from my favorite folks at Wild Ginger: Curves! It's a fabulous program that allows you to draft lingerie, foundations, bras, activewear and swimwear. After playing around with it for a while, I finally decided to take the plunge and make something for myself and my daughter. So, I decided to make new swimsuits for us.

Diana chose a bikini style, and I chose the maillot.

She chose the hip huggers, hip cut.She wanted the racer back so she wouldn't have to worry about the straps falling down.

The fabric is a lycra swimsuit print from Jo-Anns.

For my own suit, I chose the maillot style with hip cut.

Front view:

I didn't put in any kind of shelf bra or anything; I just wanted to see whether I had gotten the measurements and the stretch settings right. I have enough fabric left that I will make another one like it, but fully lined and with a shelf bra.

Here is the back view.

I had never done elastic application before where the elastic was zig-zagged to the fabric, and then turned under and topstitched. I will need some more practice getting this right; however, the suit fits very well and is quite comfortable.

The only problem might be in the actual use of it: I thought I was getting swimsuit fabric, but really it was a slinky knit, so I don't know how opaque it will be! I think I will take a shower in it before attempting to wear it at a public pool!
