The Carriage House, First Level

Cloister Walk

We originally thought the carriage house postdated the main house by about ten years, but have since learned that the two were built at the same time. Also, the white paint in the walkway is all that remains of the original paint which once turned this red-brick house into a blazing white facade. Somehow, I can't see painting the beautiful brick just to duplicate the original look...

The main house and the carriage house are joined by this covered walkway we call the "Cloister Walk." The arches of the walkway are outlined with clear Christmas-tree lights, which look really nice at night.

This is the view as you leave the kitchen door from the main house. The window just visible after the walkway's turn is in Welmoed's office.

This room was probably a guest room originally, as it has a full private bath and two closets.

When we first started renovating this room, we peeled off a layer of contemporary wallpaper to reveal the original wallpaper: an oriental design with a very dark background. Unfortunately, it was not salvageable, although we did save a small scrap in our restoration book.

This is Bob's office. He can enjoy the fireplace from his desk, and he also has a lovely view of the back of the property from a bay window to the right of the fireplace. He has witnessed hawks making dive-bomb attacks on the squirrels and rabbits. This room was originally Clara Hyatt's office.

The fireplace has been converted to gas logs.

The main level of the carriage house also includes the three-car garage. It currently holds two cars and a workshop. To protect the plumbing in the second level, we installed a heating zone in the garage to keep it above freezing.
